CHAPTER THIRTY-EIGHT

Lori kept still, anger filling her lungs, ready to explode with an assault of foul-mouthed screams. The sleazy, sneaky son of a bitch Spaniard had just taken all she had left, and she wanted to make him pay. She had made him pay.

A helicopter buzzed over the building like a wasp, the blades slicing the air so fast it could be heard even from inside. A voice spoke through a megaphone, and although Lori couldn’t make out the words, the look on Rivera’s face told her all she needed to know. She could hear the sound of footsteps pounding the floor and the frantic shouts from men somewhere within the building.

His operation in Castleford was over. She only had to survive the night.

If there was one thing that could be said for her impression of Rivera, it was that he wouldn’t be messed with. The anger in his eyes spoke volumes as he stood by the door of the office, glaring at her while he listened to the demands that came from outside. He ordered Carl to set the charges. If there was one thing he wasn’t prepared to do, that was hand over his operation and evidence to the authorities. He looked out into the corridor as men raced back and forth. Lori heard someone shout out, “Are you gonna move out?” He shook his head in frustration, pointed at Lori, and snapped his fingers. “Bring the bitch.”

Reynolds stomped over to her and heaved her to her feet by her hair. Lori kicked and screamed, smashing her elbow into his stomach and causing him to recoil. It was enough to hurt him but not enough to break free. Too bad—it was all she had.

He dragged her through the door, cursing as they stumbled down the stairs and across the warehouse floor while he tried to keep up with his companions. Rivera’s men crouched by the exits and loading bays, semiautomatics trained. Bright lights flooded through the windows that lined across the entire upper half of the wall. Lori blinked them out, desperate to stay on her feet and keep up, lest she fall and be dragged the rest of the way by her hair.

They didn’t stop until they reached the fire exit.

The men with them drew their guns.

Rivera opened the door only a little, peering through the thin gap as the light bled through. He winced, shut it again, and spun around to bark orders. “You, come with me. You two give us fire cover until we reach the car. And you—” He drove a finger at Reynolds. “Stay close, and whatever you do, don’t let her go.”

“Yes, sir.”

“What about me?” Carl asked, pushing through the crowd of armed men.

Rivera stared at him with cold, emotionless eyes, before he raised the gun to Carl’s forehead and his finger snaked around the trigger. “You should never have let it come to this.” He fired the weapon, a deafening explosion lighting up the room. Blood sprayed across their suits like a paint bomb had exploded.
